When I told my mother I was starting a carpet cleaning company, she looked at me and said, "You sure that's what you want?" My in-laws said I should get a real job…my friends were skeptical.
They all meant well. I mean, here I was, a couple semesters away from graduating with a degree in advertising. But I just wanted to start a business.
I'd worked with a carpet cleaning company for a couple of months, so I had a little experience. All my research showed a cleaning business had low start up cost and good supply of profit potential.
So, I had to make a decision. I could have just taken a job at an ad agency. After all, that's what my family and friends thought I should do.
I'm Sure You Had To Face Something Like This
I remember my wife's grandfather saying, "You went to college so you could be a carpet cleaner?" He was half joking. But he was trying to talk me out of doing it.
I didn't pay any attention to them. Entrepreneurism had made its way into my soul. I got out my new shiny credit card and put a HUGE dent in it. An $11,200 dent to be exact. I had never purchased anything that cost that much in my life. Now I was committed. It was go time.
So there I was full of pride, excitement, and fear. I had a beautiful new truckmounted machine installed in a decent looking older Chevy Astro Van I picked up for $1,000. I got IICRC certified in carpet cleaning. I was ready.
The Yellow Pages Money Pit
I took out a small yellow pages ad hoping the calls would pour in. Now, at this time I still had two full semesters left to finish my degree. I had already read a few advertising books and taken a couple intro to advertising classes. But in reality, I only knew enough to make my bank account dangerous.
I remember writing headlines in utter frustration. I couldn't tell a good headline from a bad headline. There were too many guidelines and rules that contradicted each other. It was so easy to screw it up. I kept the first salesletter I ever wrote. Now I look back at it and laugh. I was pitiful!
Although the response I got from those ads wasn't very good, I didn't give up. I was determined to make it work. I had to. I kept studying advertising and learning from other cleaners.
Targeted Marketing
Through a process of learning and error, I eventually cracked the code. I learned how to create highly targeted advertising.
I built my carpet cleaning company to be one of the most expensive, well-known companies in my city.

They have the knowledge on how to do it. But they lack the wisdom of experience. You have to roll book knowledge into experience for advertising to work. And let me tell you, it's a long, expensive journey.
