How I Got Into the Cleaning Business

I recently met with a coaching member who is starting a cleaning business.

He’s only 21. He reminded me a lot of myself when I started.

You may need to hear this, because I want to show you that if I can do it, you can too. I had nothing to start with.

I was in college, majoring in advertising.

I REALLY wanted to start a business. Any business.

And I did NOT want to work for someone else.

I had worked with a “splash and dash” carpet cleaning company for two months, so I felt I had some experience. At the time, I was working at a hotel making barely over minimum wage.

I had nothing to lose.

So, I got out my shiny new credit card and charged a $10,000 brand new truck mount. Then, I bought a decent looking used van for $1,000.

I was in business!

But I had no customers. However, I did do my marketing homework. I still had A LOT TO LEARN.

I developed a strategy. Then I developed marketing tactics that started with newspaper ads and a direct mail campaign to homeowners in high-end neighborhoods. Then, I developed Internet marketing that brought in lots of great clients.

It’s what worked for me.

Ten years later, I started Hitman Advertising.

FAQ about this book:

How much are the private label rights and customization?

$997 total.  That’s it.  The fee includes graphic design, customization of the cover, small changes to one chapter, and rights to use the book in your city.  The only other thing you’ll need to pay for is the printing of each book. 

How much is it to print each copy?

Approximately $2.85 plus a small shipping fee.

Is there a minimum order to get a book printed?

There’s no minimum.

Can I change some or part of the book?

There is room for changing small parts of the book.  Typically, a carpet cleaning company may want to change the section about the method of cleaning if they strictly do dry cleaning.  Small amounts can be changed for no charge, but changing more than a couple hundred words or changing text in several places may have a small additional fee.

Neighborhood EDDM Postcard

I sent out 2100 of these 8 x 10 inch postcards on Monday and booked 11 jobs so far.

Does EDDM work?  It works well when you do it right.

Yes, this EDDM postcard gets a great return every time I run it in my company.

And every time one of my clients run it correctly, they get a great return too…typically a 4X RETURN on their advertising investment. But results do differ and you could do better or not as well.

What makes this EDDM postcard work?

In this EDDM postcard, the message is all about SOCIAL PROOF.

The entire message is about proving to the homeowner that we have recently cleaned in their neighborhood.

We do this by putting up a picture of the house we cleaned or something in the front of their neighborhood.  In this case, we put up a picture of the neighborhood sign.

This gets ATTENTION and PROVES you were in the neighborhood!

How many times do you get a postcard with a picture of something in your neighborhood?  Seldom.

When a homeowner is thinking about hiring a service, she wants to know who her neighbors use.  This postcard tells her.

How could you make this postcard respond better?

You could include a testimonial of your client on Marcus Pointe Blvd.  To make the sales message even better, include a picture of you and your client by the testimonial.

What else was done for a better response?

We gave an offer of 3 FREE gifts with any minimum cleaning purchase.  You don’t have to give away this much, but the offers we gave strategically promote cross-selling of our other services….not just carpet cleaning.

We explained WHY we were giving the offer.

We boasted and gave specifics about our 100% satisfaction guarantee.  We want them to know they can trust us.

We gave a deadline.  This offer isn’t good forever and we want them to not forget about it.
